About Bankside Lofts
Bankside Lofts is an iconic residential complex of loft-style apartments, created in the early 1990s on the south bank of the River Thames, adjacent to Tate Modern and opposite St Paul’s Cathedral.
Each apartment interior is individually designed, giving the development a unique architectural style. The images on this website capture this character and detail.
Located in Hopton Street, SE1, owners and residents are well-placed close to national and local attractions, from the Southbank Centre to Borough Market. Bankside Lofts is within walking distance of the City and West End.
The Bankside development
Bankside Lofts is a Manhattan Loft Corporation development. There are 120 apartments, completed between 1995 and 1998. (manhattanloft.co.uk/projects/south-bank-penthouses)
Designed by award-winning architect Piers Gough, the heart of the development is a former Victorian cocoa warehouse. To the north is a converted 1950s office building of similar height, curving round the street line. This has been extended upwards and sideways to form a distinctive, yellow ochre terraced tower. There are single and double height lofts throughout, with commercial premises at ground level.
Bankside Lofts is adjoined to the south by Gallery Lofts; glass-fronted to make the most of its views across to St Paul's and the City.
A large raised, Japanese-style garden on the roof of the residents' carpark overlooks Tate Modern and the river.
In 1999, the complex won both an Award for Best Restoration and Conversion of an Existing Building and a Civic Trust Award.
